Supporting Victorian drivers with new heavy vehicle maps

30 October 2018

VicRoads is making it easier for truck drivers to avoid hazards on the road and obey road rules, with a major digital map upgrade.

A new series of heavy vehicle maps have been published online to help drivers manage height clearances, truck curfews and permit applications while travelling on Victoria’s road network.

Eric Henderson, VicRoads’ Director of Heavy Vehicle Services, said that the new height clearance map will make it easier for heavy vehicle drivers to choose arterial roads suitable for their vehicle size.

“Whether you’ve hired a truck for the day or you’re a career truck driver, our new height clearance map is a great way to plan a safe route,” Mr Henderson said.

“This map will help reduce the number of dangerous bridge strikes on our roads, boosting safety and slashing incident-related congestion for Victorians.”
1,150 overhead structures have been added to the VicRoads height clearance map as of 10 October 2018.

Mr Henderson said that the new truck curfew map will help heavy vehicle drivers identify which routes are they can use, given the time of day and the mass of their vehicle.

“Truck curfews help us balance the needs of local truck operators with the needs of the local community. Our new curfew map will make it easier for truck drivers to identify which roads they can take,” Mr Henderson said.

Two additional maps have also been delivered with pre-approved routes for high productivity freight vehicle combinations up to 36.5m long, slashing permit application times for Victoria’s freight network.

Data for all four maps is now available on the VicRoads Open Data site so that GPS developers can easily incorporate the information into their applications and recommended routes.

The scheme supports Victorian Government’s Towards Zero strategy by encouraging safer routes and reducing heavy vehicle crashes on our roads.
