Cook Street, Port Melbourne right-turn median closure

27 October 2021

We’re closing the median opening in Cook Street at the VicRoads depot exit in Port Melbourne in order to stop vehicles turning right.

What are we doing?

We’re closing the median opening in Cook Street at the VicRoads depot exit in Port Melbourne in order to stop vehicles turning right. Department of Transport (DoT) made a commitment to WorkSafe Victoria to implement the closure to minimise traffic risks. Currently DoT vehicles exiting the VicRoads Depot and Emergency vehicles are allowed to turn there but all other vehicles are banned.

As part of these works, we will:

  • Remove the existing sign pole with the No Right-Turn sign and No U-Turn sign.
  • Construct the kerb across the median opening, similar to the adjacent kerbs.
  • Install a new ‘One Way’ sign facing the Depot entrance.

Who will it impact?

  • Construction works will impact drivers using the area and businesses along the southern side of Cook Street.
  • A right-turn and U-turn ban are already in place for the general public so it should not affect those abiding by the rules. Only DoT and emergency vehicles have been allowed to turn there in the past.
  • People who currently ignore the existing right-turn ban will no longer be able to turn there once the median opening is closed.
  • The right-turn ban will be added to the existing U-turn ban which means drivers will have to turn at the next intersection.

What to expect during works

While the road works are taking place, there will be:

  • three-to-five-minute delay for motorists
  • on-site traffic management
  • low level noise and some paint odours
  • workers on site to assist pedestrians

When?

Works will take place from 27-29 October 2021 between 10am-5pm. If the project is impacted by weather, we may need to extend works.
