Transport Alert: Upcoming closure of Bell Street, Preston

21 September 2022

Bell Street, Preston will be closed to traffic over five days at the end of September, as part of level crossing removal works along the Mernda Line.

A full road closure will be in place between St Georges Road and High Street from 12.01am Tuesday, 27 September to 5am Monday, 3 October.

Motorists are encouraged to take a wide detour using Albert Street, Murray Road and Elizabeth Street, to avoid congestion around the closure.

We ask drivers to allow up to 20 minutes extra for their journey, as significant delays are likely during peak periods.

During this closure, crews will remove the disused rail tracks across Bell Street, excavate for the installation of drainage and kerbs, resurface the road and paint new line markings.

The VicRoads Real Time Signal Operations team will be monitoring traffic conditions during the works and will adjust traffic lights sequences to minimise congestion in the area.

The recent removal of the level crossings on Bell Street, Murray Road, Cramer Street and Oakover Road will result in safer and more reliable travel times for around 82,000 drivers that used the four crossings each day.

When travelling on public transport, or in a taxi or rideshare service, passengers must wear a fitted mask covering their nose and mouth for the entire journey. Authorised Officers are now enforcing mask wearing.

Real-time traffic conditions are available at traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au or via the VicTraffic mobile app. The latest public transport information and network status is available at ptv.vic.gov.au or in the PTV mobile app.
