Travelling in Melbourne’s West and beyond

19 June 2023

Melbourne’s west is one of city’s most rapidly growing areas with the area experiencing unprecedented growth in the past decade.

To cater for this growth, major transport infrastructure projects such as the West Gate Tunnel are being undertaken as well as a significant investment in transport maintenance.

There will be several disruptions to road and rail in the west over the winter period. This page has been designed to help you get from A to B more easily.

Plan ahead before you travel and allow extra time.

The West Gate Tunnel Project

As part of Victoria’s Big Build, we’re building an alternative to the West Gate Bridge. The West Gate Tunnel will create better connections across our city and take thousands of trucks off local roads. The West Gate Freeway will also be widened from 8 to 12 lanes.

Impacts to roads

Dynon Road Bridge closed from 16 June to 31 August

Dynon Road will be widened and strengthened over winter 2023. From 8pm on Friday 16 June until 7am on Thursday 31 August, Dynon Road Bridge will be closed in both directions between Dryburgh Street and Dynon Road inbound exit ramp from CityLink.

Wurundjeri Way single lane closures to 31 October

Works to support the future Wurundjeri Way extension, will see lane closures between Dudley and Colins streets until 5am, Tuesday 31 October.

Geelong Road closure from 16 June to late July

Geelong Road to Princes Freeway outbound entry ramp will be closed from 9am on Friday 16 June to 5am Wednesday 2 August as the ramp is rebuilt to connect to the widened West Gate Freeway.

For more information on the West Gate Tunnel project and detour routes visit the Big Build website.
