Brunswick Street Part Time Tram Lane (PTTL) Enhancement Project

We’re upgrading the part time tram lane on Brunswick Street to improve tram travel times and service reliability, and to provide a safer cycle pathway.

Part time tram lanes (PTTLs) operate during peak traffic periods with the days/times of operation displayed. During these times, drivers are not allowed in a part-time tram lane unless they need to avoid an obstacle or turn right (can enter for up to 50 metres).

We are now extending our working hours for the road marking component of the works to commence from 9pm on Thursday 17 June, weather permitting.

Duration of these works will be 4 nights from Victoria Parade to Hanover Street then 4 nights from Argyle to Cecil/Alexandra Parade, excluding weekends. Noise will be minimal.

Planned works will continue weekdays (Sunday to Thursday) at nights only from 12.30am to 5am: Victoria Parade to Hanover Street early to mid-June; Argyle Street to Cecil Street on Brunswick Street commencing mid/late June, dependent on weather.

Tram spotters will be operational from 9pm to 12.30am for the duration of the works, to ensure safety  on tram services along Brunswick Street.

The Department of Transport (DoT) in partnership with Yarra Trams will be upgrading the part time tram lane on Brunswick Street.

As part of this upgrade we will:

  • Extend the existing southbound part time tram lane between Victoria Parade and Hanover Street by about 80 metres to King William Street.
  • Install a new dedicated right turning lane on the southbound lane of Brunswick Street at the Gertrude Street intersection.
  • Remove four parking spaces to accommodate the new right turn lane.
  • We’ll also improve safety for cyclists near the intersection of Brunswick Street and Victoria Parade by:
    • Installing a ‘pop up’ bicycle lane bollard to protect cyclists from traffic approaching the intersection.
    • Adding 30 metres of bicycle lane to join two existing sections of bicycle lanes.
    • Extending the physical tramway separators (between the tram lane and traffic lane).
    • Removing three parking spaces to accommodate these changes.

What to expect

  • Majority of works will take place during the night.
  • Some works will take place during the day outside of peak times to minimise impacts to traffic on Brunswick Street.
  • Minimal noise.
  • There may be some minor delays on Brunswick Street. Please plan your journey and allow for extra travel time.
  • Throughout construction, we’ll be maintaining access to residents and traders. If anything changes during construction, we will directly contact you.

Works will begin in late May/June 2021 and be completed by June/July 2021.

Impacts during works

  • Sections of Brunswick Street will be closed weekdays (Sunday to Thursday) at nights only: Victoria Parade to Hanover Street commencing early June; Argyle Street to Cecil Street on Brunswick Street commencing mid/late June.
  • There will be no left turn between 12.30am and 5am from Brunswick Street into Victoria Parade during works.
  • Local access will be maintained during road closures at nights; roads will be open again during each day from 5 am until after midnight.
  • Road, bike and pedestrian detours will be clearly signed and there will be reduced travel speeds to keep our crews and road users safe.
  • There will be no impact to tram services along Brunswick Street, as works will be completed outside tram hours.
  • Noise levels and dust impact from linemarking and kerbing works are expected to be minimal.
