Project update
The Victorian Government is delivering routine maintenance works over the Bulla Road Bridge. This includes asphalt resurfacing and improvements to drainage to prevent water ingress (damp). These works will provide a smoother and safer journey while prolonging the life of the road surface.
We’re also making the existing speed limit—40km/h—a permanent and enforceable speed limit. To further improve safety, we will upgrade existing safety and warning signage and pavement marking to improve visibility for motorists at night.
These works will take place on:
- Sunday 16 January at 8.30pm–5.30am
- Monday 17 January at 8.30pm–5.30am
To deliver these works and to keep motorists and our crew safe, the bridge will be closed for two nights (weather permitting). Please plan ahead and expect long delays.
During these night works you can expect:
- full closure of bridge access (except for emergency vehicles) on both nights
- reduced speeds of 40km/h close to the works area to keep our crew and road users safe on both sides of the bridge from 8.30pm–5.30am
- alternative detour routes in place with traffic controllers present to assist with detour route for both road and pedestrian traffic
- Bulla Road will be closed between Bulla Diggers Rest Road (Leomans Road) and Oaklands Road
- detour route will be in place along the Western Ring Road, the Calder Freeway and Vineyard Road
- businesses and local residents will still be able to access their properties
- some medium to high levels of noise
- electronic message boards and signed detours for traffic, cyclists and pedestrians will be in on both sides of the bridge and in advance of roads leading into the work area.
Although the Bulla Road Bridge will be operational during the day for motorists, please plan ahead and expect long delays for the night works.
If you’re travelling through the area, keep an eye out for changed traffic conditions.

Project background
Bulla Road carries on average 23,000 vehicles per day of which 7% are heavy vehicles.
Routine maintenance works are required on the Bulla Road Bridge. This will include asphalt resurfacing and improvements to drainage, that will help us to preserve the roads and avoid more disruptive rehabilitation works in the future. It will also provide a smoother and safer journey while prolonging the life of the road surface.
Bulla Road between Bulla-Diggers Rest Rd (Loemans Rd) and Somerton Rd (Green St) (1.81kms) has experienced 11 crashes over the 5-year period ending 31 December 2020. 10 of the 11 crashes occurred north (and west) of the bridge. Of these in total there was 1 fatal crash, 5 serious injury crashes and 5 other injury crashes.
The new safer 40km/h speed limit and upgrades to signage and line marking, will allow for vehicles to safely pass each other and also lower the risk of side swipe or head on accidents on or near the bridge.
Red line below indicates the extent of speed limit change along Bulla Road.
