Burke Road, High Street and Doncaster Road intersection Road Safety Improvements

The Australian Government is investing $275,000 to make it easier and safer to turn right from Burke Road into Doncaster Road in Balwyn North.

About the project

Right turn crashes occur when right turning vehicles fail to give way and/or pick the wrong gap in traffic while filtering to turn right. By fully controlling the right turn we’ll make this turn safer for all road users.

The right turn from Burke Road into Doncaster Road will be fully controlled by traffic signals between 10am and 2pm and 8.30pm and 6.30am.

We’ll be resurfacing the road between the intersection and Maud Street and extending the right turn lane to safely accommodate right turners while keeping traffic flowing through the area.

In the five-year period ending 31 December 2018 there were eight reported crashes at this intersection, five of those involved vehicles turning right from Burke Road into Doncaster Road.

How will these works impact you?

To minimise disruption to traffic and keep everyone safe during these improvements, we’ll work at night. Crews will be on site Sunday to Thursday from 9pm to 5am, with no work scheduled on Friday or Saturday.

Works are expected to start on Wednesday 17 February and be completed within a week, weather permitting.

To keep everyone safe, we will need to:

  • close a section of Burke Road - between Walbundry Avenue and Maud Street - with signed detours in place for up to four nights, while we resurface the road.
  • introduce lane closures while we reinstate linemarking
  • temporarily remove the on-street parking on Burke Road between Walbundry Avenue and Maud Street for up to a week while work is underway. Public parking is available in the public car park accessible via Maud Street and Doncaster Road
  • introduce a safe speed of 40km/h near the work zone throughout the works.

Vehicle access to nearby properties will be maintained at all times and our on-site traffic controllers can assist residents to safely access and exit their properties.

We’ll have traffic controllers on-site to help motorists travel safely through the area. Please look out for signs and allow for extra time when travelling through the area.
