Burwood Road intersection upgrades

We’re making some improvements at the intersections of Burwood Road and Glenferrie Road and Burwood Road and Auburn Road in Hawthorn.

The Australian Government is investing $600,000 through the Urban Congestion Fund to undertake traffic signal improvements on Burwood Road at the intersections of Glenferrie Road and Auburn Road in Hawthorn.

Both intersections experience significant congestion resulting from vehicles queueing to turn right from both Burwood Road approaches, particularly during peak periods.

These queues impede the flow of traffic on Burwood Road.

To address this issue, we’re installing right turn arrows and upgrading the traffic signals to help ease congestion.

We’re also installing flashing ‘Give Way to Pedestrian’ signs at the Burwood Road and Glenferrie Road intersection making it safer for pedestrians to cross at this busy intersection.

The community and Boroondara Council have been advocating for congestion and road safety improvements along Burwood Road, including at the Glenferrie Road and Auburn Road intersections.

What you need to know

Works will be starting on this important road upgrade in early July 2021 and are expected to be complete in October 2021.

Our crews will be working Mon to Fri from 9:30am to 3:30pm including some weekends.

We may need to work at night, but we’ll notify the community in advance.

To keep everyone safe during construction, we may need to close lanes and introduce safer speeds. We will have traffic controllers on site to guide drivers and pedestrians through the work zone.

During works, access to residential properties and local businesses will be maintained at all times.

Electronic message boards and traffic management will be on site to help motorists travel through the area safely.
