Centre Road and Bignell Road intersection safety improvements
Location:
Bentleigh East
Type:
Road
Status:
Planned
The Victorian Government is investing $5 million to upgrade the intersection of Centre Road and Bignell Road in Bentleigh East.
About the project
We’re making things safer at this busy intersection by installing traffic lights, adding dedicated turning lanes on Bignell Road and a new pedestrian crossing on Bignell Road.
The upgraded intersection will help traffic queuing along Bignell Road safely turn left or right on to Centre Road as well as improving safety for pedestrians accessing nearby St Peter’s Primary School and Catholic Church.
A new coloured bicycle box and line marking will also improve safety for cyclists along Bignell Road, creating separation and reminding drivers of the potential presence of cyclists.
The existing pedestrian crossing on Centre Road, opposite the primary school, will not be impacted by the intersection upgrade works.
Update - September 2023
To accommodate the new lanes and pedestrian crossing on Bignell Road, a narrow section of land is being acquired. Once the land is available, we will begin the key tasks of road-widening, installation of traffic lights and street lighting, resurfacing and linemarking.
In the interim, we will be undertaking service relocations in and around the intersection. We are waiting on schedule details for significant Telstra relocation works and are working through design details for modifications to NBN cabling.
We will be in touch with the community closer to the start of these works with information on impacts and timeframes.
We are planning to advertise the tender for major construction later this year, with full civil construction works due to begin in early 2024.
