Centre Road and Bignell Road intersection safety improvements

The Victorian Government is investing $5 million to upgrade the intersection of Centre Road and Bignell Road in Bentleigh East.

About the project

We’re making things safer at this busy intersection by installing traffic lights, adding dedicated turning lanes on Bignell Road and a new pedestrian crossing on Bignell Road.

The upgraded intersection will help traffic queuing along Bignell Road safely turn left or right on to Centre Road as well as improving safety for pedestrians accessing nearby St Peter’s Primary School and Catholic Church.

We’re also improving safety for cyclists along Bignell Road with a new bicycle box and bike sharrow line marking informing drivers of the shared road environment.

To accommodate the new lanes and pedestrian crossing on Bignell Road, a small amount of land is being acquired from St Peter’s Catholic Church.

Land acquisition and further preparatory works will take place this year, ahead of construction starting in early 2024.

Next Steps

Early works 12 & 13 January 2023

Service proving works are required to identify services in the roadway at the intersection.

The works will take place at the following times:

  • 9am to 3.30pm, Thursday, 12 January 2023 and Friday, 13 January 2023

There will be low level noise associated with digging and traffic management in place due to rolling lane closures.

Traffic delays will be minimal and access to driveways will not be impacted.

Design

We’ll be sharing artist impression visuals and design plans with the community in March 2023 so they can ask questions and provide feedback on the proposed works.

We’ll be starting works on this important intersection upgrade following a review of all feedback received from the community and once land acquisition has taken place.
