Ferrars Street City Road intersection upgrade

The City Road/Ferrars Street intersection is being upgraded to provide two-way access along Ferrars Street. It currently only provides northbound entry.

The Ferrars Street Education and Community Precinct is a major project for the redevelopment of Fishermans Bend. It features Victoria’s first vertical school that integrates multi-purpose community facilities and a new community park.

Fishermans Bend is Australia’s largest urban renewal project, covering approximately 485 hectares in the heart of Melbourne. It consists of five precincts across two municipalities – the City of Melbourne and the City of Port Phillip – and connect Melbourne's CBD to the bay.

It is expected that by 2050, Fishermans Bend will be home to approximately 80,000 residents and provide employment for up to 60,000 people.

Safety, accessibility and connections to the surrounding Montague area will be improved by these intersection upgrade works as well as upgrades of nearby public transport connections.

Project Update

The layout of the intersection will be modified with traffic signals to allow two way access from Ferrars Street. As part of the project, pedestrian and cyclist access will also be improved. About the project

VicRoads will be improving safety at the intersection by:
  • smoothing the corner of the intersection
  • installing traffic splitter islands and new pedestrian refuge islands
  • adjusting the existing traffic signals
  • improved linemarking

Benefits

These works will improve safety at the intersection and allow traffic to travel in both directions on Ferrars Street.

The intersection upgrade will improve access to the new South Melbourne Ferrars Street Primary School and community facilities, due to open in January 2018.

Objectives

  • Safe, efficient access to the precinct for all road users
  • Improved pedestrian safety and access
  • Allow for increase in traffic volumes throughout the area

Community involvment

We met with nearby businesses to discuss the upgrade in early 2017 and will continue to work with the community throughout the intersection upgrade

What happens next?

The intersection upgrade will begin in late May and will take several months to complete.  During the works, there will be lane closures on City Road while Ferrars Street northbound will be closed. Speed restrictions will also apply to ensure the safety of workers and the community.
