Project Update - June 2019

Delivering the Gap Road and Horne Street intersection upgrade has been complex and challenging, but it’s important we get it right.

We’ve switched on the traffic signals to provide a safer intersection for the community.

While we complete the upgrade, these signals will run on a temporary fixed time sequence and will be linked to the nearby level crossing at the end of construction.

We’re temporarily banning the right turn lane on Horne Street to Gap Road and monitoring the traffic signals and adjusting the timing to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow through the intersection.

The traffic signals will operate as normal when works are completed in mid-2019.

Due to complications caused in relocating underground services, including drainage and utility services, and on-site ground conditions, there has been a delay in project progress.

We thank the community and local businesses for their patience as we continue with this important upgrade.

So far we have completed:

  • Gap Road kerb and channel works
  • foundations and electrical condiuits for traffic signals
  • removed roundabout and central islands
  • installed a smaller temporary roundabout for traffic control
  • relocated telephone lines and NBN communications services
  • relocated water services, including installation of a new water main and removal of the old water main
  • relocation of gas and power services
  • replaced drainage along Horne Street and Gap Road.

Project background

The Gap Road and Horne Street intersection carries large traffic volumes , with 21,500 vehicles per day travelling on Horne Street and 18,000 vehicles per day on Gap Road. The intersection is also a meeting point for thousands of drivers coming to and from surrounding main roads, such as Riddell Road, Sunbury Road and the Calder Freeway.

The high amount of traffic and location of the roundabout often results in long queues and delays, particularly during the morning and afternoon peaks.

The new traffic lights, pedestrian crossing and other safety treatments such as raised platforms will make it easier and safer for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to travel through the area.
