Glenferrie Road bridge upgrade works Malvern

From Monday 16 January to Friday 21 April, 2023, important bridge strengthening and tram track renewal works will take place on Glenferrie Road between Como Street and Station Street in Malvern.

From 10pm Friday 7 April to 5am Friday 21 April, Glenferrie Road will be closed between Como Street and Station Street.

About the project

The Department of Transport is undertaking important bridge strengthening and tram track renewal works on the bridge over Malvern Station in Malvern.

These works will ensure the structural integrity of the bridge into the future and allow heavier vehicles and all classes of trams to travel on Glenferrie Road without restriction.

Works also compliment already completed bridge and tram track renewal upgrades along Glenferrie Road including at Gardiners Creek and between Barkers Road and Riversdale Road.

To complete these works, we’ll need to demolish the existing footpath and tram track slab, build a new bridge deck and reinstate the existing road and footpath conditions with upgraded tram tracks.

We’re also completing service renewal works located under both footpaths.

The works will need to be completed in three stages:

  • Western footpath works: Monday 16 January to Wednesday 1 March, 2023
  • Eastern footpath works: Thursday 2 March to Friday 7 April, 2023
  • Road closure and tram track works: 10pm Friday 7 April to 5am Friday 21, 2023, with trams resuming services from 5am Monday 17 April, 2023

Road closures and detours for traffic management set-up

Traffic management will be set up at night between 10.30pm Monday 16 January to 5am Tuesday 17 January. During this time, Glenferrie Road between Como Street and Station Street will be closed to north-bound traffic as we install concrete barriers along the works area.

We’ll then need to reclose the road to north-bound traffic from 10.30pm Tuesday 28 March to 5am Wednesday 29 March to remove the concrete barriers. The following night, we’ll need to close the same section of road to south-bound traffic to install concrete barriers on the opposite side of the road for the eastern footpath works.

During these road closures, only local traffic will have access to Glenferrie Road from Dandenong Road.

Detours will be in place to direct traffic around the works area.

Footpath and service renewal works

To be able to complete this work safely and allow continued access across the bridge during works, we’ll be working on one footpath at a time and closing one of the two lanes on the bridge to create a work area.

Crews will be working during the day to complete these works.

There will be two periods of medium to high level noise for 3-4 days as we demolish each of the existing footpaths.

Temporary footpath closures will be in place. Pedestrians will be directed to use the footpath on the opposite side of the road.

Kerbside parking on the bridge will be temporarily unavailable while works are undertaken on each side.

Between Monday 16 January to Wednesday 1 March, traffic will not be able to left turn into Glenferrie Road from Como Street while we work on the western footpath.

During the eastern footpath works, there will be no traffic access to Glenferrie Road from Station Street between Thursday 2 March and Friday 7 April. There will also be additional temporary parking losses on Station Street during this time.

Route 16 tram services will still be operating during the footpath works.

Road closure and tram track works

Glenferrie Road between Como Street and Station Street will be closed to both traffic and trams from 10pm Friday 7 April to 5am Monday 17 April, 2023. The road will remain closed to traffic until 5am Friday 21 April, 2023, however tram services will resume from 5am Monday 17 April, 2023.

During the road closure, traffic will not be able to left turn onto Glenferrie Road from Como Street or access Glenferrie Road from Station Street.

Medium to high level noise can be expected, especially in the first 1-3 days as we demolish the bridge deck and tram tracks. However, there will be intermittent noise expected after this time.

Where possible, we’ll look to complete the noisiest works during the day to lessen the disruption on the local community.

There will be service changes to Route 16 trams during this time.

Access to local residences and businesses will be maintained at all times, however vehicles will not be able to travel across the bridge while the road is closed to traffic.

Traffic management will be on site and detours in place to help motorists travel around the works safely.

We’ll provide detour information in March to help you avoid this area during the works.

Please plan ahead when moving through the area and allow an extra travel time.

Public transport changes

Tram impacts

Buses will replace trams on Route 16 between Stop 48 Hawthorn Road and Dandenong Road  and Kew from 9pm Friday 7 April to the last tram on Sunday 16 April.

Tram replacement buses will run to normal frequency during works, however there may be some delays due to congestion around the works zone.
