About the project

The Department of Transport and Planning undertook undertaking important bridge strengthening and tram track renewal works on the bridge over Malvern Station in Malvern from Monday 16 January to Wednesday 19 April 2023.

This project was one of nine being delivered across the state as part of a $32.43 million investment to deliver an integrated, sustainable and safe transport system for all Victorians.

These works ensure the structural integrity of the bridge into the future and allow heavier vehicles and all classes of trams to travel on Glenferrie Road without restriction.

Works also complement already completed bridge and tram track renewal upgrades along Glenferrie Road including at Gardiners Creek and between Barkers Road and Riversdale Road.

Works included:

  • demolishing the existing footpath and tram track slab
  • completing service renewal works located under both footpaths
  • building a new bridge deck
  • reinstating the existing road and footpath conditions with upgraded tram tracks.
