Glenferrie Road - track maintenance road closure

From Friday 24 June to Monday 11 July, there will be full road closures on Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn, between Barkers and Riversdale roads.

What is happening?

Yarra Trams in partnership with the Department of Transport (DoT) is conducting ongoing maintenance and renewal works across the Melbourne tram network to ensure a safe and reliable tram service for future generations.

The tram tracks on Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn, between Barkers and Riversdale roads are over 56 years old and have reached the end of their life cycle. To continue to deliver a safe and reliable tram service to the area, these tram tracks must be replaced. During the upgrade of the tram tracks, the power poles and tram powerlines in this section will also be upgraded. 

Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn, between Barkers and Riversdale roads will have disruptions from Sunday 22 May, including a full road closure from 9pm, Friday 24 June to 5am, Monday 11 July 2022.

Early works

9pm to 5am, Sunday 29 May to Friday 24 June 2022 

Night works will take place from Sunday 29 May to Friday 24 June, from 9pm to 5am daily to identify underground services on Glenferrie Road between Barkers and Riversdale roads. 

During this time, there will be: 

• Nightly lane and parking closures on Glenferrie Road between Barkers and Riversdale roads. 
• Intersection closures at Glenferrie Road and Burwood Road from 9pm to 5am from Sunday 29 May to Wednesday 1 June.  
• Intersection closures at Glenferrie Road and Barkers Road from 9pm to 5am from Wednesday 1 June to Sunday 5 June.  
• A site shed set up at the intersection of Glenferrie Road and Lynch Street.  

Major works

9pm, Friday 24 June to 5am, Monday 11 July 2022 

Full closures will take place from 9pm Friday 24 June to 5am Monday 11 July on Glenferrie Road, from Riversdale Road to Barkers Road. 

Construction will take place 24 hours a day so that we can complete the works quickly. Noise and dust are unavoidable; however, Yarra Trams will work to minimise this as much as possible and complete the noisiest works during the day. 

The Glenferrie and Burwood Road intersection will be closed from 9pm, Friday 24 June to 5am, Monday 27 June . 

The Glenferrie and Barkers Road intersection will be closed from 9pm, Friday 1 July to 5am, Monday 4 July. 

Riversdale Road will remain open throughout the works.

Getting around

To support you to move around the area during the works, detours and traffic management will be in place.

We recommend that road users allow extra travel time for their journey.

There will be temporary footpath closures around the works with local detours in place. Pedestrians should follow signage around the works.
