Malvern Road - track maintenance and bridge strengthening

From Sunday 20 March to Friday 29 April, at the intersection at Malvern and Orrong Roads there will be 24 hour bridge strengthening works where traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction at the bridge over Caulfield Rail.

From Friday 29 April to Sunday 15 May there will be full road closures along Malvern Road, between Essex Street and Mandeville Crescent. 

What is happening?

Yarra Trams in partnership with the Department of Transport (DoT) is conducting ongoing maintenance and renewal works across the Melbourne tram network to ensure a safe and reliable tram service for future generations.

As part of the high priority maintenance and renewal program, sections of the tram track between Little Chapel Street and Mandeville Crescent in Prahran and Toorak have been identified for renewal works.

The bridge over the Frankston, Cranbourne and Pakenham train line has been identified as requiring strengthening as part of an overall bridge strengthening program being undertaken across metropolitan Melbourne. The strengthening of the bridge will mean heavier vehicles and trams are able to travel on Malvern Road.

Stage 1: Early works service investigations

Sunday 6 March to Friday 29 April

Malvern and Orrong Roads intersection, between 9pm and 5:30am, from Sunday 6 March to Friday 29 April, will be closed for bridge strengthening service investigations.

Only local traffic including cars, trams, and buses will be allowed when requiring access.

Malvern Road, between Little Chapel Street and Beatty Avenue, between 9pm to 5:30am, from Sunday 6 March to Friday 29 April, will have nightly lane closures. Worksites will progressively move along Malvern Road as the investigations progress.

There will be low to medium noise levels and no impacts to access to properties.

Please follow signage and traffic management around the work zone and allow extra time when planning your journey.

Stage 2: Bridge strengthening and site set up for tram works

Sunday 20 March to Friday 29 April

Malvern and Orrong Road intersections, between Sunday 20 March to Friday 29 April, will have 24 hour bridge strengthening works, including footpath closures, and traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction on Malvern road at the bridge over the Caulfield Rail.

Bus and tram stops will be relocated, lanes will be reduced to one shared lane for both trams and vehicles.

Orrong Road will be closed southbound, between Malvern Road and Molesworth Street and closed northbound, between Malvern Road and Lambert Road.

Beatty Avenue will be closed at Malvern Road.

There will be lane and local parking closures between Little Chapel Street and Cromwell Road.

The bridge strengthening site shed will be set up at the intersection of Beatty Avenue and Malvern Road from Sunday 20 March to Sunday 15 May.

There will be another tram works site shed that will be set up at the intersection of Lorne Road and Malvern Road from Friday 15 April to Sunday 15 May.

There will be detour routes for Bus services route 604 and 605, including stop closures.

Sunday 17 April to Friday 29 April

Malvern Road, between Little Chapel Street and Cromwell Road, will have full road closures between 9pm to 5:30am, all other times, there will be one lane in each direction open, with no local parking available.

Lorne Road will be closed at the intersection of Malvern Road

Stage 3: Tram maintenance and renewal major works

Friday 29 April to Sunday 15 May

Full closures will take place on Malvern Road, between Essex Street and Mandeville Crescent. Malvern Road will reopen from west to east as the works progress, Williams Road intersection will reopen on Monday 2 May.

Malvern Road will be open between Chapel Street and Williams Road from 5am, Saturday 7 May.

The intersection of Malvern and Orrong Road will be closed. All side streets from Orrong Road are open.

All side streets along Malvern Road will be closed.

High levels of noise are expected in the first week of works to complete concrete, steel and asphalt cutting works.

There will be service changes to tram route 72, visit the Yarra Trams website for more information.

There will be bus detours for Routes 603, 604 and 605, including stop closures.
