Monash Freeway bridge strengthening

We’ve strengthened some of the bridges along the Monash Freeway between Ferntree Gully Road and Gladstone Road in Melbourne’s south-east to allow for heavy vehicles.

Project update - December 2016

Works on the freeway started in May 2016 and the strengthening of eight bridges has now been completed.

We’d like to thank the community for their patience during the works, when night time lane closures, speed reductions and temporary barriers were in place.

A number of existing roads and bridge structures were upgraded to allow for the size and weight of High Performance Freight Vehicles (HPFV) so they can operate safely on the Monash Freeway.

Bridge strengthening took place at four locations:

  • Ferntree Gully Road, Glen Waverley
  • Jacksons Road, Mulgrave
  • Police Road, Mulgrave
  • Gladstone Road, Dandenong North
The project involved strengthening the bridges by attaching carbon fibre rods and laminate to the underside of the bridge, and the replacement of guard rails and barriers at Ferntree Gully Road.

Project background

The Monash Freeway is one of Australia’s busiest and most relied upon freeways. It gives us an important link for freight vehicles, allowing a direct route from the Port of Melbourne to industrial suburbs like Dandenong.

HPFVs are larger and heavier than standard heavy vehicles and have been travelling safely on dedicated roads throughout the state over the past few years.  These vehicles are able to carry more and are expected to save our community 4.5 billion vehicle kilometres between now and 2030.

HPFVs offer a direct safety benefit due to their safer on-road performance, with Austroads research suggesting they’ll prevent 94 fatal crashes and 114 fatalities nationally by 2030.
This upgrade will allow heavy vehicles to take more direct routes from our farms, towns and communities, improving their productivity as well as enhancing safety and efficiency for all motorists.
