Mount Alexander Road - track maintenance road closure

From 8pm Monday 3 January to 5am Tuesday 18 January, Mt Alexander Road will be closed to traffic in two sections between Dean Street and Sydney Street, and South Street and Mooltan Street for essential tram track maintenance and renewal works. The intersection of Ormond Road and Mount Alexander Road will be closed from 8pm Monday 3 January to 5am Saturday 8 January 2022.

Temporary lane and parking closures will also be in place during early works from 6 December to 22 December 2021.

Major works

Works will be undertaken to replace tram tracks, underground cables and tram powerlines along Mt Alexander Road from Travancore to Moonee Ponds.

Construction will take place 24 hours a day so that we can complete the works quickly. Noise and dust are unavoidable; however, Yarra Trams will work to minimise this as much as possible and complete the noisiest works between 6am and 10pm.

High levels of noise are expected in the first couple of days while we dig out the tracks and remove rubble.

Early works

From 6 December to 22 December 2021, Yarra Trams will undertake 24-hour works to deliver and weld the tram rail, remove old tram poles and stand new ones, and locate underground services.

During this time, there will be temporary lane and parking closures between Ailsa and Middle streets, Flemington.

South Street will also be closed between Mount Alexander Road and Ayr Street from 5am Monday 6 December 2021 to end of works on 18 January 2022.

Mount Alexander Road may be closed for short periods between 8pm and 5am during the early works period while the rails are unloaded.

Getting around 

To support you to move around the area during works, detours and traffic management will be in place.

We recommend that road users allow extra travel time for their journey.

During works, the footpath near the tram depot will be closed. Temporary closures and detours may be required at times and signage will be in place to direct pedestrians.

Local access and parking

There will be no access for through and local traffic from Dean Street to Sydney Street (including the intersection at Ormond Road) and from South Street to Mooltan Street. Access in and out of Mooltan Street will be via Ormond Road only.

On-street parking will be closed within the work area.

Flemington Street will have limited access for residents and community facilities.

From 7am to 7pm Monday 3 January to Tuesday 11 January, residents and community facilities can access Flemington Street via Padman Lane. There will be no vehicle access to Flemington Street between 7pm and 7am.

From 7am to 7pm, Wednesday 12 January to Monday 17 January, residents and community facilities will be able to access Flemington Street via Little Princess Street. There will be no vehicle access to Flemington Street between 7pm and 7am.

Traffic controllers will direct traffic and help facilitate local access where needed. Detours will be in place along Ascot Vale Road, Racecourse Road/Elliot Ave, Moreland Road and Royal Pde/Sydney Road. Please follow signage and traffic management around the work zone and allow extra time when planning your journey.

Public transport

There will be service changes to tram routes 58 and 59, with buses replacing trams.
