New safer speed through the Greythorn Shopping Centre

The Victorian Government has invested $300,000 to make it safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers travelling through the Greythorn Shopping Centre on Doncaster Road in Balwyn North.

Project update – March 2023

We’re currently working with the power company to complete the power connection to the site.

Once the power connection works are complete, we’ll install and switch on the four new electronic speed limit signs.

Please continue to obey the existing signage and any temporary traffic conditions until the new electronic speed limit signs have been switched on.

We’d like to thank the community for their patience whilst we complete these important works.

About the project

We’re introducing a safer 40km/h speed limit through the Greythorn Shopping Centre in Balwyn North. The 40km/h speed limit will be in place on Doncaster Road between Ferdinand Avenue and Ellsa Street; from 8am to 8pm every day.

Impact to travel times is expected to be minimal. The new 40km/h speed limit will add approximately 20 seconds to travel times.

We will be installing four new electronic speed limit signs to help ensure the speed change is clearly visible to motorists. The electronic speed limit signs will remind drivers that they are entering a high pedestrian activity area and they need to slow down to 40km/h.

New static signs will also be installed leading up to and throughout the area.

Background

Approximately 10,000 vehicles travel through the Greythorn Shopping Centre on Doncaster Road, Balwyn North every day.

In the 5 years leading up to 2020, there were 12 reported crashes through the strip shopping centre on Doncaster Road between Ferdinand Avenue and Ellsa Street; 2 of these involved pedestrians and 3 involved cyclists.

The safer 40km/h speed limit will improve safety at the busy Greythorn Shopping Centre for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists. It will also help improve safety for drivers entering or exiting angled parking bays and side roads.

As a community, we should never value shaving a couple of minutes off our journey over potentially losing a life or causing a life-changing injury.
