Project background

The outer north is one of Melbourne’s fastest growing areas and increasing demand on the network.

Approximately 52,000 vehicles use Plenty Road between McKimmies Road and Bush Boulevard as well as an average of 35,000 vehicles continuing their journey between Bush Boulevard and Bridge Inn Road daily.

About the project

The Victorian Government has funded $139.4 million to upgrade Plenty Road between McKimmies Road and Bridge Inn Road to reduce congestion and improve safety.
Work has been fast-tracked to design and construct the first section of Plenty Road, between McKimmies Road and Bush Boulevard, with construction starting in late 2017.

As part of the project from McKimmies Road to Bush Boulevard, we are:

  • widening the road with an additional lane in each direction for a 2.8 kilometre section of Plenty Road between McKimmies Road and Bush Boulevard
  • improving five major intersections including at Childs Road and Centenary Drive
  • installing traffic barriers to prevent crashes
  • building safer lanes for cyclists
  • installing safety barriers making it safer for all road users

As a part of the project from Bush Boulevard to Bridge Inn Road, we are:

  • widening the road from four to six lanes between Bush Boulevard and Riverdale Boulevard
  • widening the road from two to four lanes between Riverdale Boulevard and Bridge Inn Road
  • improving bike and walking facilities
  • improving major intersections including Bridge Inn Road

We’re fixing the roads you use every day so you spend less time in traffic and more with friends and family.

Upgrading Plenty Road will provide a more efficient and safer road for Melbourne’s rapidly growing northern suburbs. We'll also improve access to local employment, education and social centres.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our online community engagement, for the section between McKimmies Road and Bush Boulevard.
