Queens Parade and George Street, Fitzroy signalised intersection

We're upgrading pedestrian and bike safety at the corner of George Street and Queens Parade in Fitzroy ahead of the opening of the new Wurun Senior School Campus and Fitzroy Gasworks precinct in January 2022.

What we're doing

We're improving safety by:

  • Installing traffic lights at the corner of Queens Parade and George Street to provide a safer crossing location.
  • Delivering minor changes to the service roads on both the north and south sides of Queens Parade to create more space on the footpath and help with school pickup at the traffic lights.
  • Creating a safer route for bike riders through early access into the service road linking Queens Parade with Napier Street.

Interim changes to the Queens Parade service lane will support the school by providing short term drop off and pick up parking, bus parking and a school loading bay while still enabling trucks to continue to support the surrounding works still underway.

Once the school, Gasworks redevelopment and sports facilities are completed and trucks no longer need access, we will create further changes to the service lane to improve safety while assisting traffic flow for school pick up and drop off.

What to expect during works

  • From 17 January 2022 until late January, George Street will be closed, and you will need to detour via Smith Street.
  • For a few days during that time, a single citybound right lane in Queens Parade will be closed and you will not be able to turn into or out of Jamieson Street.
  • For a few days, the right lane on Queens Parade (outbound) near George Street will have reduced speed limits while traffic signal, pedestrian crossing and curb works are completed.

When will the project be completed?

Early works have now started. Traffic management will be in place for significant works from January 17, 2022 until the project is completed in late January 2022, in time for the start of the school year.

  • George Street closed from Monday 17 January to Monday 31 January
  • Right turn lane closed on Queens Parade (citybound) from Monday 17 January to Monday 31 January
  • Right-hand lane closed on Queens Parade (outbound) between Monday 17 January to Monday 31 January
