Racecourse Road safety improvements

Work to install a new pedestrian crossing and other safety features on Racecourse Road, Flemington, got underway in October and will conclude in early December.

Project update

We’re making Racecourse Road safer for local residents and road users travelling through Flemington.

This project includes:

  • Installing a new crossing and pedestrian operated lights at the tram stop at Victoria Street
  • Improving street lighting, so that pedestrians and cyclists can be clearly seen at night
  • Finishing work to extend the protective fencing at the tram stop
  • Improving line marking, to protect pedestrians and cyclists
  • Installing 40km/h electronic speed signs

During these works the impacts may include:

Works commenced in October and – depending on the weather – will take approximately eight weeks to complete. Our crews will be working:

  • Monday to Friday between 6:30pm and 10:30pm
  • Some nights between 10.30pm and 5am
  • Saturdays and Sundays between 7am and 7pm.

How will these works affect you?

While some noise is unavoidable, we will work to minimise this as much as possible and complete noisiest works between 6.30pm and 10.30pm.

During construction, we will need to close one lane in each direction so there may be some delays to traffic, please plan ahead and allow extra time.

The tram stop at the intersection of Racecourse Road and Victoria Street (tram stop 24) will be closed to ensure everyone’s safety during these works. Please use the tram stop at either Wellington St (tram stop 25) or at Stubbs St (tram stop 23).

Access to residential properties will be available at all times. We’ll have traffic management in place to help you move through the area during the works.

We appreciate your patience while we undertake these important safety improvements along Racecourse Road.

Project background

Pedestrians and cyclists are vulnerable road users, therefore creating safer crossing opportunities will provide safer places for people to cross the road and get on and off the tram.
