South Gippsland Freeway Noise Wall replacement

The Victorian Government is investing $2.4 million to replace a stretch of noise wall on the South Gippsland Freeway in Hallam, between Frawley Street and the Princes Highway.

What are we doing

We’re replacing a 720m stretch of noise wall on the South Gippsland Freeway in Hallam, between Frawley Street and the Princes Highway.

Ongoing assessments across the road network have found that the section of timber noise wall, on the southbound side of the South Gippsland Freeway between Frawley Road and the Princes Highway, require replacement.

As part of these works, we will be:

  • Removing the posts and panels of the existing failing timber noise wall.
  • Installing new galvanised steel posts and new noise wall panels.

Made from 75% recycled material, the new noise wall panels will ensure that we are able to continue providing residents with stronger and more sustainable noise protection into the future.

When to expect us

Works will be undertaken in June 2023 and are expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

Crews will be working in the road reserve next to the noise wall above the South Gippsland Freeway. They’ll be working Monday to Friday between 7am and 5pm and on Saturdays between 8am and 2pm. There will be no works on Sundays.

What to expect

We will be working progressively in 100m stretches to dismantle the existing wall and install the new wall. A small number of trees and overgrown shrubs within the road reserve directly impacting the noise wall need to be removed and pruned to complete the works.

A replanting strategy is also being developed to improve native vegetation on the road reserve side of the noise wall and discourage graffiti.
