Sydney Road safety improvements

Victoria’s first innovative on-road safety stamps are being trialled on Sydney Road, Brunswick

As part of a new road education initiative targeting both drivers and cyclists, VicRoads is trialling Victoria’s first on-road safety stamps on Sydney Road, Brunswick.

Safety stamps are visual prompts painted directly on the road to remind road users they are in a shared zone.

This trial is part of the second stage of safety improvements being introduced on Sydney Road.

Sydney Road in Brunswick has a significant crash history. In the five year period ending June 2015 there were a total of 178 casualty crashes between Brunswick Road and Albion Street.  92 of those involved cyclists, and 25 were car dooring, including one fatality in February 2015.

Cyclists are generally affected more significantly than drivers of vehicles in a crash.

Through on-road markings we aim to remind cyclists and drivers to be mindful of each other when sharing the road, and ultimately improve safety on the road for everyone.

These safety improvements are part of the Safe System Approach promoted by VicRoads and the TAC (External link) in our Towards Zero Campaign (External link) (External link) (working towards bringing Victoria’s road toll down to zero).

Project timeline

Stage 1

The first stage of Sydney Road improvements were completed in July 2015. These included:
  • the introduction of speed humps on Sydney Road side streets
  • new green bicycle lanes at all intersections
  • a right-turn ban from Sydney Road into Hope Street during peak hours
  • a permanent 40km/h speed limit on Sydney Road between Brunswick Road and Bell Street.

Stage 2

Stage two is currently in progress (as at October 2015). In addition to the on-road markings, other safety improvement works for Sydney Road between Barkly Street and Albion Street include:
  • electronic ‘Give Way to Pedestrians’ signs
  • bicycle-priority green head start boxes at intersections
  • ‘Pedestrian Head Start’ traffic signals at intersection traffic lights along Sydney Road.
These works are currently underway and are expected to be complete by November 2015.
