Westall Road Extension

We have applied for funding to build a Westall Road Extension to improve traffic movement from Princes Highway to the Monash Freeway.

Project update - May 2018

Thank you to those who provided feedback on our engagement website, engageVicRaods  to assist with the development of our funding proposal.

Project background

In 2014, VicRoads received funding to prepare a business case for the construction of the Westall Road Extension.

The proposed Westall Road Extension passes through the Monash National Employment and Innovation Cluster (NEIC) (External link). This is Melbourne’s largest concentration of employment outside of the CBD. To manage the growing population and employment in this area, we’ll need to improve the transport network. The Westall Road Extension is expected to divert traffic and freight from nearby roads, improving traffic movement from Princes Highway to the Monash Freeway, and improving access to the Monash NEIC and the wider area.

About the project

The Westall Road Extension is proposed to follow an existing road reserve from the intersection of Westall Road/Princes Highway to the Monash Freeway

Project benefits

  • Improved traffic flow in the local area by reducing traffic and freight on parallel roads  such as Blackburn, Springvale  and Clayton Roads.
  • Improved traffic movement in and around the south-eastern region and Monash NEIC.
  • Better freight routes to commercial areas in Moorabbin, Braeside and Dandenong South.
  • Better connections to Clayton and Springvale Activity Centres.
  • Opportunity to improve public transport operations on priority bus routes in the area.
  • Provide safe off-road bicycle and pedestrian facilities parallel to the new roadway connection.

Community involvement

From June to August 2017, we consulted with the community to understand the existing situation and learn from people’s local experience of using Westall Road and the surrounding road network.

The  feedback helped us understand the key issues, concerns and ideas for the  the proposed extension.

Phase 2 of the community engagement was conducted from August 2017 – October 2017. The aim of this phase was to gather stakeholder and community feedback on the benefits and concerns associated with three design options for the Westall Road Extension.
