Western Port Highway corridor upgrade

We are investigating ways to make travel easier and more predictable for people who live and work in Melbourne’s growing south-east.

We are currently exploring potential future improvements to the Western Port Highway and Glasscocks Road.

Project background

VicRoads has previously completed a planning study and planning scheme amendments (PSA) for the upgrade of the Western Port Highway between South Gippsland Highway and Cranbourne-Frankston Road.

We consulted the community to help develop the preferred option for long-term improvements. The planning study considered transport, land use, social, environmental, cultural heritage and economic issues, and identified the land needed to be reserved to allow for a potential future freeway conversion.

About the project

Customer feedback is an extremely important part of how VicRoads seeks to continually improve the Victorian road network.

The Western Port Highway is a key freight route and gateway to significant industrial and commercial precincts and an important link to some of Melbourne’s most popular beaches. Population growth and increased development in the south-eastern suburbs has led to higher volumes of traffic in the area.

Therefore, we’re seeking feedback on potential future improvements to the Western Port Highway from:

  • South Gippsland Highway to Cranbourne-Frankston Road,
  • North Road to Baxter-Tooradin Road; and
  • Glasscocks Road from Dandenong-Frankston Road to South Gippsland Highway.

We will use your feedback, together with technical information and input from our partners to develop options which will be presented to Government for potential future funding.

Community involvement

We invited the community to provide feedback into how they travel through these areas:

  • Western Port Highway between South Gippsland Highway and Cranbourne Frankston Road
  • Western Port Highway between North Road and Baxter-Tooradin Road
  • Glasscocks Road between Dandenong Frankston Road and South Gippsland Highway.

We will present proposed options to the community in 2019.

Next steps:

We’ll review your feedback and consider this alongside technical information and input from our partners.

A summary report of your feedback will be shared on this page.

There will be further opportunities to have your say on this project in 2019.
