William Street closure – tram stop upgrade

From 10pm, Tuesday 1 February to 5am, Monday 7 February 2022, William Street will be closed to all traffic between Collins Street and Bourke Street. The intersection of Little Collins Street will be open.

On Sunday 6 February, the eastbound lane on Collins Street will be closed between King and William streets and the northbound lane on William Street will be closed from Flinders Lane. Traffic management and signage will direct traffic, please follow signage around works.

Major works

Works will be undertaken to upgrade tram Stop 4, William Street and Collins Street, to an accessible platform stop.

Construction will take place 24 hours a day so that we can complete the works quickly. Noise and dust are unavoidable; however, Yarra Trams will work to minimise this as much as possible and complete the noisiest works between 6am and 10pm.

High levels of noise are expected in the first couple of days while we dig out the tracks and remove rubble.

Getting around

To support you to move around the area during works, detours and traffic management will be in place.

We recommend that road users allow extra travel time for their journey.

There will be temporary footpath closures around the works with local detours in place. Pedestrians should follow signage around the works.

Bike lanes will be closed between Collins Street and Bourke Street. Detours in place.

See detour maps below for more information.

Local business

The businesses located around the works will remain open. Please continue to support local businesses during these essential works.

Public transport

There will be service changes to tram routes 58, 11, 12, 48 and 109. For more information on tram changes, visit the Yarra Trams website.
