Anglesea Road/Great Ocean Road safety improvements

The Victorian Government has prioritised two of our highest risk, rural roads between Geelong and Anglesea, with a $12 million investment to upgrade safety and save lives, as part of Towards Zero

Towards Zero (External link) is the Victorian Government’s vision for a future free of deaths and serious injuries on our roads. It acknowledges that as humans, we make mistakes. That’s why we need to ensure we have a safe road system in place that protects us from our own mistakes and those of others.

Project update – July 2017

We recently undertook planning and consultation work to upgrade a 25 kilometre section of Anglesea Road and The Great Ocean Road.

Our team spoke with you about the project and listened to your ideas on how we can improve this stretch of road.

Community involvement

We'd like to thank the local communities along Anglesea Road and The Great Ocean Road for their extensive feedback on social media, and at our recent information session
This valuable feedback will help inform our final design and construction program.

We look forward to continuing to work closely with the community to learn from your local knowledge, and to minimise and manage impacts as much as possible.

Project background

Anglesea Road and The Great Ocean Road are two of the highest risk roads in the state, having seen 13 serious crashes in the last five years alone on a 25km stretch between Geelong and Anglesea. Tragically, two people lost their lives as a result of these crashes, with a further 13 receiving serious injuries.

These roads are vital tourist routes to the Surf Coast and Otways. They also service regular commuters between the Armstrong Creek growth area and the City of Geelong.

They are two of the fastest growing corridors in South-West Victoria with the added complexity of high numbers of tourist and international drivers.

As a result, it has been identified as one of twenty high-risk roads in the Towards Zero Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan (External link), which is seeing $340 million invested into known crash black spots on more than 2,500 kilometres of rural and regional roads across the state.

About the project

This project spans the 25km stretch of Anglesea Road and The Great Ocean Road between Geelong Ring Road, Waurn Ponds and Anglesea township.

The safety improvements include:
  • wide centre line between Geelong Ring Road and Coombes Road, Moores Road to Minter Drive and Forest Road, to the township of Anglesea
  • flexible safety barriers to separate traffic lanes between Minter Drive and Forest Road
  • flexible safety barriers on the side of the road in high risk locations
  • a new roundabout at the Great Ocean Road, Gundrys Road and Addiscott Road intersection
  • replacing all existing flexible safety barriers with new barriers to better protect motorcyclists
  • improvements to key intersections to make them safer, including left turn deceleration lanes at Grossmans Road
  • increased safety for pedestrians in Bellbrae

Benefits

This upgrade will:

• reduce the risk and severity of intersection crashes if they do occur
• reduce head-on and crossing centre-line crashes
• reduce road trauma
• cater for the growth along the corridor, including Armstrong Creek
• improve access and safety through upgraded intersections

What happens next?

We’ll look at your feedback and use this to help inform the final design.

Works are expected to start by the end of 2017.
