Gap Road & Horne Street intersection upgrade, Sunbury

The Victorian Government has funded $9.6 million to install traffic lights and a pedestrian crossing at the Gap Road and Horne Street intersection, to improve safety and traffic flow.

Project update - May 2018

Works commenced in April 2018.

From 20 - 25 May, there will be changed conditions at and near the intersection of Gap Road and Horne Street in Sunbury.

Overnight works and closure of the intersection

As part of our upgrade of the Gap Road and Horne Street intersection, we’ll be doing overnight works from:

  • Sunday 20 May - Friday 25 May

During these night shifts, we’ll need to:

  • reduce lanes on Gap Road and Horne Street close to the intersection from 10pm - midnight
  • fully close the intersection from midnight - 6am.

To minimise traffic impacts and ensure the safety of our work crews, these works need to occur at night. We’ll have traffic management operating after 10pm to lessen the impact on local businesses operating at the intersection.

If your services will be interrupted, your service provider will notify you in advance.

Thanks for your patience while we undertake these works. We’ll have detours in place so plan ahead, allow extra travel time and follow detour signage. We’ve included the detour map below.

During overnight closures of the Gap Road and Horne Street intersection in Sunbury, there will be detours in place.

  • If you are travelling northbound from Vineyard Road towards the intersection: you’ll need to turn left onto Mitchells Lane and right onto Elizabeth Drive, which will take you up to Riddell Road where you’ll be able to turn left and right or continue straight up Elizabeth Drive.
  • If you are travelling eastbound along Gap Road towards the intersection: you’ll need to turn left at Elizabeth Drive and then right at Riddell Road, where you’ll be able to continue down Macedon Street and turn right into Barkly Street towards Station Street.
  • If you are travelling southbound from Elizabeth Drive: you’ll need to continue down Elizabeth drive, then turn left onto Mitchells Lane and right onto Vineyard Road.
  • If you are travelling southbound down Racecourse Road towards Station Street: you’ll be able to turn left onto Riddell Street and right onto Barkly Street, however other side streets around the intersection will remain accessible for locals only.
  • If you are travelling southbound down Racecourse Road towards the Vineyard Road: you’ll need to turn right at Riddell Road, then turn left at Elizabeth Drive, left at Mitchells Lane and right at Vineyard Road.

Project background

The Gap Road and Horne Street intersection carries large traffic volumes , with 21,500 vehicles per day travelling on Horne Street and 18,000 vehicles per day on Gap Road. The intersection is also a meeting point for thousands of drivers coming to and from surrounding main roads, such as Riddell Road, Sunbury Road and the Calder Freeway.

The high amount of traffic and location of the roundabout often results in long queues and delays, particularly during the morning and afternoon peaks.

The new traffic lights, pedestrian crossing and other safety treatments such as raised platforms will make it easier and safer for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to travel through the area.

About the project

As part of the upgrade we will:

  • replace the existing roundabout with traffic lights
  • add additional lanes
  • install a new pedestrian operated crossing
  • create a dedicated bicycle lane

Benefits

This project will:

  • improve traffic flow and reduced delays at the intersection
  • improve traffic flow through Sunbury
  • increase safety for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists
