Hyland Highway Upgrade

$10 million is being invested for road improvements along 64 kilometres of the Hyland Highway from Traralgon to Yarram

Project update - January 2018

Construction announcement was made by Member for Gippsland Darren Chester on 11 December 2017.

Project background

The Australian and Victorian Governments have committed $80 million for upgrades to major roads in Gippsland. These upgrades will improve safety and reliability along the roads as well as support local businesses, create job opportunities and stimulate tourism and growth in the region. VicRoads undertook engagement with the community to provide input on the projects to help identify the best options.

About the project

With the feedback from the community VicRoads has identified works that will improve road safety, accessibility, efficiency and reliability.

The works include:

  • Shoulder construction and sealing
  • Intersection improvements
  • Safety barrier installation
  • Sealing slow vehicle pull over areas
  • New signage and line marking

Benefits

Benefits of the project include:

  • Improved safety with sealed shoulders
  • Intersection upgrades
  • Overtaking opportunities
  • New line marking and signage
  • Installation of safety barriers

Community involvement

VicRoads held discussions with key stakeholders in March 2017 and had a series of community drop in sessions in May 2017 to seek feedback and identify areas of concern along this route. Feedback was also provided via our online engage.vicRoads site. More than 350 people provided either formal (written) or informal (social media) feedback.

The community and stakeholder feedback, along with technical advice and information from VicRoads and other authorities has guided our decision.

We have addressed the three primary concerns for the community with our planned works. These are:

  • Narrow roads – results in shoulder construction and sealing
  • Poor intersections – results in intersection improvements
  • Limited overtaking opportunities – results in pull over areas.

The focus of the feedback was on the road sections between Flynns Creek Upper and Carrajung Lower and therefore this is where we are concentrating our efforts and funding.

If funding allows after these works we will consider  other priority areas, such as:

  • Carrajung Lower to Yarram.  This may include shoulder construction and sealing and installation of safety barriers starting from Carrajung Lower and heading towards Yarram; OR
  • Intersection improvements in Gormandale.

What happens next?

We will report back to the community via engage.vicRoads and provide a project update with construction timings. As works progress we will continue to update the community via the project webpage, local media and direct contact (email/mail).
