O'Callaghans Parade Roundabout Safety Improvements

We’re improving safety at one of Horsham’s busiest intersections by building a new roundabout.

Project background

The Federal and Victorian Governments have invested $20 million into upgrades of the Western Highway between Stawell and the South Australian border.

As part of these upgrades, we will be building a new roundabout to improve safety and traffic flow at the intersection of the Western Highway and O’Callaghans Parade in Horsham. This intersection has recorded nine serious crashes in the five period from January 2013 – December 2017.

About the project

The redesigned intersection will include:

  • Separation of Melbourne-bound Western Highway traffic from the rest of the intersection
  • Mountable kerb to make it easier for trucks to complete u-turns
  • Improved pedestrian and bicycle connections
  • Removal of the right-hand turn into O’Callaghans Parade from the Western Highway

Project benefits

These improvements will make using this intersection safer for everyone by:

  • Reducing the risk and severity of crashes
  • Separating Western Highway traffic from vehicles accessing O’Callaghans Parade
  • Providing safer connections and crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists

Community involvement

We have consulted with local residents and business owners throughout the design phase with much support for the plans. We are also appreciative of the local cycling community who have assisted to ensure the inclusion of safer cycling connections.

What happens next?

Construction is planned to begin in October 2018 and be completed by early 2019.
