Pioneer Road Waurn Ponds

The Victorian Government’s commitment of $12.5 million to upgrade the final stage of Pioneer Road will improve safety and reliability in this growing shopping and recreational neighbourhood.

The upgrade will reduce congestion in the shopping and recreational precinct and allow for safer access at the intersection of Pioneer Road and Meadowvale Drive.

Project update - January 2018

We are now heading toward the final stages of construction of the bridge over the Waurn Ponds Creek, installation of traffic light poles at Meadowvale Drive and widening of Pioneer Road to accommodate two lanes of traffic in both directions.

We’re focused on getting the traffic lights operational, laying a new layer of asphalt and marking new lines, to make it clear and safe for everyone.

Project background

Pioneer Road provides a major link between Colac Road and Torquay Road, and connection to neighbouring suburbs such as Waurn Ponds, Grovedale and Armstrong Creek.

About the project

This upgrade will:

  • Improve traffic flow with two lanes in each direction between Colac Road and Church Street
  • Improve safety by upgrading intersections and installing traffic lights at Meadowvale Drive
  • Ease congestion by synchronising traffic lights to let more traffic through
  • Improve safety for pedestrians with safer crossing points and improved paths
  • Improve capacity with a new bridge over Waurn Ponds Creek
  • Encourage cycling by introducing safer designated bike lanes

Why is it needed?

Pioneer Road is a major east/west arterial road south of the Geelong Central Business District, forming a vital link from the Geelong Ring Road to the rapidly expanding Grovedale, Armstrong Creek Growth Area and Surf Coast districts.  In addition, Pioneer Road provides direct access to several large abutting commercial outlets, namely Leisurelink Aquatic Centre, Waurn Ponds Library and Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre.

As traffic volumes on Pioneer Road increase, congestion will continue to build in the precinct. Planning for the future indicates that the old roundabout at the intersection of Pioneer Road and Meadowvale Drive wouldn't be a safe option for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to safely find gaps in traffic.

These works compliment the first stage of the Pioneer Road upgrade which was completed in 2013.

Duplicating Pioneer Road and installing traffic lights at the intersection of Meadowvale Drive will improve safety and help reduce congestion along Pioneer Road by improving traffic flow and reducing the number of vehicles that currently queue at peak times.

The new traffic lights will be linked to signals at other locations along Pioneer Road, ensuring more efficient traffic flow. This will further ease congestion and enhance access in and out of the shopping and recreational precinct.

Safer pedestrian crossings and improved paths will link with the existing path network. Connections with paths around Waurn Ponds Creek will provide additional opportunities for recreational pedestrians and cyclists.

Traffic management

We appreciate that roadworks can pose an inconvenience for road users, businesses and residents and we're working closely with contractors to keep the traffic moving safely and minimise disruption during the extensive works.

We thank everyone for your patience and understanding during construction.
