Pioneer Road Waurn Ponds
The Victorian Government has committed $12.5 million for Stage Two of the Pioneer Road upgrade to improve safety and reliability in this growing shopping and recreational neighbourhood.
The upgrade will reduce congestion and allow for safer access at the intersection of Pioneer Road and Meadowvale Drive.
The improvements to Pioneer Road will result in 200 metres of divided road with two lanes in each direction, a duplicated bridge over Waurn Ponds Creek, new traffic signals at the intersection of Pioneer Road and Meadowvale Drive, cycling lanes, and a better connection with the Princes Highway.
Traffic lights along the entire length of Pioneer Road will be synchronised, resulting in more efficient traffic flow.
Facilities for cyclists will be provided along the entire length of the duplication.
The project will be completed in three stages: the Central Stage, Eastern Stage and Western Stage.

Why is it needed?
Pioneer Road is a major east/west arterial road south of the Geelong Central Business District, forming a vital link from the recently completed Geelong Ring Road to the rapidly expanding Grovedale, Armstrong Creek Growth Area and Surf Coast districts. In addition, Pioneer Road provides direct access to several large abutting commercial outlets, namely Leisurelink Aquatic Centre, Waurn Ponds Library and Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre.
As traffic volumes on Pioneer Road increase into the future, congestion will continue to build in the precinct. Planning for the future indicates that the roundabout at the intersection of Pioneer Road and Meadowvale Drive will not be a safe option for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to safely find gaps in traffic.
These works compliment the first stage of the Pioneer Road upgrade which was completed in 2013.
Duplicating Pioneer Road and installing traffic signals at the intersection will help reduce congestion along Pioneer Road and into Meadowvale Drive by improving traffic flow and reducing the number of vehicles that currently queue at peak times.
The new traffic signals at the intersection of Pioneer Road and Meadowvale Drive will be linked to signals at other locations along Pioneer Road, ensuring more efficient traffic flow. This will further ease congestion and enhance access in and out of the shopping and recreational precinct.
The traffic signals will make it easier and safer for motorists to exit from Meadowvale Drive onto Pioneer Road. Currently, the roundabout does not provide a safe, predictable gap in traffic during peak times.
Safer pedestrian crossings and improved paths will link with the existing path network. Connections with paths around Waurn Ponds Creek will provide additional opportunities for recreational pedestrians and cyclists.
Works are currently underway and are expected to be completed by late 2016.
We appreciate that roadworks can pose an inconvenience for road users, businesses and residents and we'll work closely with contractors to keep the traffic moving safely and minimise disruption during the extensive works.
While changed traffic conditions are in place, safe access into and out of all businesses and community services in the Pioneer Road precinct will always be maintained.
We thank the community for their support and patience while these roadworks are underway.
