Princes Highway East Upgrade - Sale to NSW border

Upgrade works are progressing on the Princes Highway East between Sale and NSW border as part joint funding from the Australian and Victorian Governments.

Project update

As part of the Regional and Rural Highway Upgrade Package valued at $80 million, the Princes Highway East between Sale and NSW border is receiving $50 million worth of upgrades and improvements following community and stakeholder consultation last year.

About the project

Works are progressing well to upgrade the Princes Highway East and include:

  • Intersection upgrades at 15 locations including construction of a roundabout at Cann River, safety improvements at Bumberrah Road in Johnsonville, Swan Reach Road at Swan Reach and Veldens Road at Tooloo Arm
  • Construction of an overtaking lane east of Genoa (westbound)
  • Shoulder construction  and sealing for 80km between Bairnsdale and the NSW border and associated pavement strengthening for freight
  • Safety barriers at high-risk locations
  • Signage improvements and line marking to ensure consistency
  • A cycling and walking path at the Lakes Entrance foreshore as well as pedestrian crossings and improvements to the Myer Street intersection in town
  • Drainage works, resealing and corner realignment at Mt Drummer
  • Sealing of rest areas at 18 locations
  • Installation of Variable Message Sign gantries at Orbost and Genoa

Benefits

Improvement works will contribute to route safety, accessibility, efficiency and reliability for all modes of transport.

Township works will also improve the look and feel of local neighbourhoods and boost the local economy.

Community involvement

Community feedback was sought last year on the proposed program of works which helped VicRoads identify priorities for improvement works along this busy tourism and freight corridor.

What happens next?

This large volume of works will be staged over the next three years with completion anticipated by the end of the 2020/21 financial year.
