Strathfieldsaye intersection

The Victorian Government has committed $4.5 million to the improvement of the Strathfieldsaye Road, Tannery Lane and Club Court intersection.

Project update - December 2017

We are pleased to advise that construction of the new Strathfieldsaye intersection will commence in December 2017.

We are keen to maintain safety and traffic flow during construction and so ask that all road users and pedestrians observe all signs and changed conditions.  Importantly, the school crossing on Strathfieldsaye Road will operate during all works; however it may be temporarily relocated at times. Pedestrians will then need to follow temporary walk zones.

Project background

Strathfieldsaye Road is a busy road connecting the local community with Bendigo and is also used to access the local primary schools, kindergarten, maternal health facilities and sporting complexes.

About the Project

After significant planning and community engagement a traffic signal option was chosen to upgrade this busy intersection.

The upgrade will feature a wider intersection with new traffic signals to improve traffic flow and safety; improved street lighting; new shared footpaths and dedicated bike lanes. This all means that not only will traffic flow be safer and more efficient but the community will be supported with better active transport options, including school students crossing this busy road.

Initial works have commenced and involve the relocation of Telstra and NBN assets and the undergrounding of power with power poles then being removed. This phase of the upgrades will be finished in December with the intersection works anticipated to be completed mid 2018.

Benefits

The Strathfieldsaye intersection upgrade will include:

  • New traffic signals
  • Improved street lighting
  • Intersection widening
  • New shared footpath
  • Dedicated bike lanes

Community involvement

Two options for safety treatments to the intersection were proposed to the community; a roundabout or traffic signals.

During August 2016, VicRoads hosted two community feedback sessions. In addition, a survey was undertaken on the two options in October 2016. This consultation with the community assisted us in determining traffic signals as the safest option for traffic and pedestrians, including nearby primary school students.

What happens next?

The project involves widening Strathfieldsaye Road on either side of the intersection, requiring the removal of 20 trees.  We are working with the community to ensure the timber is reused in a beneficial way.
