How to buy a registered vehicle in Victoria.

If you’re buying a registered vehicle privately, you’ll need to: 

  1. Check the registration.
  2. Fill out the transfer application form.
  3. Submit the paperwork and fees within 14 days of sale.

Follow each step below.

If you’ve bought a vehicle from a dealer, you won’t need to follow this process as the dealer is responsible for sending all paperwork to VicRoads. 

Before you buy, check the vehicle registration to make sure it’s still registered. You should also check if it’s stolen, sanctioned, written off or has money owing on it. If it’s unregistered, visit buy an unregistered vehicle.

They must give you:

  • the transfer application form [PDF 368 Kb] (all details in the ‘seller’ section must be filled out as transfers won’t be accepted without this)
  • an original roadworthy certificate that isn’t more than 30 days old when you buy it (unless the vehicle is exempt
  • a dated receipt as proof of the sale that has:

Some vehicles and transfer types don’t need a roadworthy certificate.

What if I don’t have a Victorian licence or learner permit?

You’ll need to submit paperwork at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre and have evidence of identity.

For companies

If you don’t have a client number with VicRoads, you’ll need to submit paperwork at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre and have evidence of identity 

If you can’t attend in person, someone else can transfer the vehicle on your behalf.
