Hire vehicle number plates

Hire vehicle plates may be issued to persons holding written authority from the Taxi Services Commission to allow a vehicle to be registered as a hire vehicle.

Hire vehicle number plates are manufactured to allow ready identification of hire vehicles licensed by the Taxi Services Commission (TSC) (External link), and may only be assigned to a vehicle authorised by the TSC to operate as a licensed hire vehicle.

The plates may only be assigned to a vehicle that is registered in the name of the owner of a licensed hire vehicle.

Once issued, the plates must remain on the vehicle to which they are assigned until they are cancelled, a change of number is effected, or the plates are transferred to another hire vehicle.

Changes to hire vehicle number plates

They may be transferred from one vehicle to another provided that authorisation is obtained from the TSC prior to the transfer. Hire vehicle plates may only be assigned to a hire vehicle owned by the same person or corporation (including companies and incorporated associations) as the vehicle to which the plates were originally assigned.

No fee is payable when plates are transferred from one hire vehicle to another hire vehicle or a vehicle being registered as a hire vehicle.

Any previous number plates assigned to the vehicle must be returned to your nearest VicRoads Customer Service Centre.
