Service Providers

VicRoads has chosen to deliver the Road Smart program through approved service providers. The selection process ensures awareness, understanding and support for effective program delivery.

Road Smart lays the essential foundations for safe road use through practical and evidence-based road safety education. Designed for Year 10 (or equivalent) students, the Road Smart program provides a student with an in-class session and either an off-road or on-road in-car session, delivered by approved service providers which include:

Facilitators

Road Smart approved facilitators deliver an interactive in-class session to a group of 10-30 students in a classroom setting in school for up to 2 hours. At the session’s conclusion, facilitators will guide the Year 10 (or equivalent) students through the next stages of the program and where to access online learning materials.

To apply to become a Road Smart Facilitator, you must provide:

  • A current Australian Drivers Licence
  • National Police Check
  • Working with Children Check
  • A clean driving history – 6 demerit points or less accumulation in preceding 3 years, nil disqualifications, suspensions or cancellations of licence.

Driver training centres (off-road driving facilities)

In-car off-road sessions are delivered as a school excursion activity at a VicRoads approved driver training centres. These sessions run for an hour with VicRoads approved driving instructors taking 3 students at a time in 5-star rated vehicles. Here students learn how to safely interact with other road users and drive to the conditions while in a secured environment. 

To apply to be an approved Road Smart driver training centre, you must meet minimum requirements as set by VicRoads. For further information on the process to become a Road Smart approved driver training centre email [email protected] 

Driving instructors

Only Road Smart approved driving instructors can deliver an in-car on-road session. This 45 minute session is on public roads and takes the beginner driver and preferably their supervising driver through how to safely interact with other road users and drive to the conditions on the road. The learner’s supervising driver is encouraged to attend this session.

To apply to become a Road Smart driving instructor, you must provide:
  • A current Australian Drivers Licence
  • National Police Check
  • Driving Instructor Authority
  • Working with Children Check
  • A clean driving history – 6 demerit points or less accumulation in preceding 3 years, nil disqualifications, suspensions or cancellations of licence
  • You must also attend a Road Smart information session.

To remain an approved Road Smart service provider, you must successfully participate in accreditation, training, and audit quality assurance activities.
