Smarter Roads is adding more specialist staff to our transport operations team who respond to incidents and help to keep traffic moving.
More incident response officers and vehicles
VicRoads Incident Response Service (IRS) patrols Melbourne’s road network, clearing incidents and helping maintain traffic flow. This includes crashes, vehicle breakdowns and debris on the road. We have added 12 new Incident Response Service Officers and six new Incident Response vans to cover the arterial roads included in the Smarter Roads in Melbourne’s west, east and south-east.

Surveillance team
The Smarter Roads program has welcomed a new team, with 6 new Congestion Surveillance Officers hitting the roads to monitor worksites and clearways across the west, south-east and eastern Melbourne suburbs. The officers’ is role to monitor traffic management at construction sites, to ensure companies are complying to regulations and standards. They are also monitoring clearways during peak hours and working with the towing contractor to remove illegally parked vehicles.

New Congestion Management team
A dedicated new Congestion Management team of seven staff is focusing on tackling traffic hotspots. This team identifies quick wins for infrastructural improvements at notorious traffic hotspots in busy suburbs across Melbourne. This team actively monitors our road network and works within our Transport Operations Centre to keep making changes to improve traffic flow. The team of six area managers is responsible for real time and tactical network management, arranging rapid responses to blockages and analysing network performance information.

Our signals operations team has recruited 14 new cadet signal engineers to support the signals operations team as they tackle traffic hotspots, incidents and blockages on the network.
