West Gate Distributor - Stage 1

The Victorian Government has made the West Gate Distributor (WGD) one of its top transport priorities.

Project update - 27 June 2017

New bridge installation delay

Shepherd Bridge was temporarily closed last weekend to ensure everyone’s safety while we worked to install the new shared user path next to the bridge.

We had some unexpected delays with the installation and so we’ll need to close Shepherd Bridge again to install the remaining sections of the new pedestrian and cyclist bridge.

We’re sorry for the inconvenience caused and would like to assure you we’re doing everything we can to complete work on this complex project as soon as possible.

We’re reopening the shared user path lanes over Shepherd Bridge on Wednesday 28 June. Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to cross the Maribyrnong River on Footscray Road until the detour is back in place on Friday 30 June.

Shepherd Bridge closure

Shepherd Bridge will be fully closed again from 8pm on Friday 30 June to 6am on Monday 3 July so we can safely complete these major bridge works.

During the work there will also be temporary lane or road closures in Moreland Street, Whitehall Street, Maribyrnong Street and Sims Street.

Signed detours will be in place so be sure to plan your trip, and allow extra time for your journey. We ask that you follow temporary signage, speed limits and instructions from road workers.

As always, we’ll do our best to minimise disruption and we thank you for your patience.

Main detour (for light vehicles only)

The detour for Footscray-bound traffic will be via Dock Link Road, Dynon Road and Whitehall Street.

City-bound traffic will be diverted along Whitehall Street, Dynon Road and Sims Street.

Heavy vehicles detour

Detours for over height and HPFV will be sign-posted via the West Gate Freeway as shown in the map below.

Pedestrians and cyclists detour

The pedestrian and cyclist detour will be in place from 6am, Friday 30 June until the new bridge is ready to open. We’re aiming to open the new bridge on Tuesday 11 July.

Where possible, we’ll temporarily reopen Shepherd Bridge to pedestrians and cyclists however we expect the detour to have to be in place the majority of the time.

You’ll be diverted north along the riverbank to cross the river at Hopetoun Bridge on Dynon Road, or at the bridge further north in Newlands Paddock Wetlands Reserve.

Community involvement

We’d like to thank members of the community who came along to the bridge installation viewing deck last weekend.

Work to install the remaining sections of the bridge will continue throughout the weekend of 30 June to 3 July. If you plan to visit the Maribyrnong River Trail near Shepherd Bridge during the next closure please:
  • follow any traffic or security instructions from our workers
  • do not attempt to enter the construction site area
  • do not use your camera flash as it may distract our crane operators

Project background

The plan for the first section of the WGD is to provide better travel for local traffic, pedestrians and cyclists and improve freight access to and from the Port of Melbourne by:
  • widening Moreland Street to a four lane divided road, with an upgraded connection to Footscray Road
  • new signalised intersections in Moreland Street at Footscray Road, Parker Street and Whitehall Street
  • strengthening  and widening Shepherd Bridge over the Maribyrnong River by removing the pedestrian and cycling paths
  • installing a new bridge over the Maribyrnong River for pedestrians and cyclists.

About the project

The contract for the West Gate Distributor Stage 1 was awarded to Fulton Hogan in December 2015.

Major construction works on the site commenced in April 2016 and the project is expected to be completed by mid 2017.

During the course of the project, VicRoads and Fulton Hogan will provide information updates to the local community on the progress of the project and any planned works that may cause major disruptions or delays.

Benefits

The works will improve traffic flow and address the current bottleneck at Shepherd Bridge, as well as improve freight access to the port. It will also improve the riding experience for the thousands of people who cycle to and from the CBD by providing a dedicated, safer route over the Maribyrnong river.
