Victorian Heritage plates attract strong bidding at August auction

Wednesday 19 August 2026

Victorian collectors and motoring enthusiasts have demonstrated strong demand for Heritage plates, with ten rare combinations offered through VicRoads' August Heritage plates auction generating sales of more than $1,64 million.

The highest-selling plate of the night was 620, which sold for $365,000 following competitive bidding.

Other notable results included:

  • 9.118 sold for $170,000
  • 8.585 sold for $155,000
  • 2.122 sold for $140,000

VicRoads Registration and Licensing Services Chief Commercial Officer David Ginnane said the results reflected the enduring appeal of Heritage plates.

"Heritage plates remain some of Victoria's most distinctive motoring collectables and continue to attract interest from enthusiasts, collectors and buyers seeking a unique piece of Victorian history."

Among the auction highlights were three-digit combinations 620 and 825. Plate 620 is a rare plate that will appeal to motorsport enthusiasts and collectors, while plate 825 attracted interest for its recognised cultural significance.

Heritage plates are handcrafted using traditional enamel techniques and draw inspiration from Victoria's original 1930s number plates.

With only 285,000 Heritage plate combinations available, they remain among Victoria's rarest motoring assets.

The auction was hosted by VicRoads in partnership with Heritage Only, with participation limited to registered bidders. Interest in custom plates continues to grow across Victoria. Of more than 6.8 million registered vehicles, over 1.7 million display non-standard plates — around one in four vehicles on the road.
