What are club permit plates?
A club permit offers an alternative to regular vehicle registration for eligible historic vehicles. Club permit plates have white characters on a maroon background, and the words ‘club permit’ along the top, which makes them easy to identify while on the roads.
You can choose between standard and slimline plates, depending on what vehicle you have.

Find out how to get your club permit.
Once your club permit application is ready, you’ll need to visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre to lodge it. You’ll then receive your number plates on the spot if we have them in stock. If not, we’ll post them to your address.
Custom club permit plates
Only slimline plates are available for classic and historic permit vehicles.
- For existing club permits: You can order slimline plates for your current plates through the permit holder’s myVicRoads account.
- For new club permits: Purchase slimline plates from any VicRoads Customer Service Centre when you apply for the permit.
Purchasing a vehicle with Club Permit plates
If you've purchased a vehicle with Club Permit plates on the vehicle, and you want to keep those plates:
- you must be a member of the same club that the club permit was issued under, and
- the existing club permit must be current or expired by less than 3 months
You will still need to submit a new club permit application, but you can keep the same plates on the vehicle.
