Upgrade your probationary licence to drive a manual vehicle

How to convert your probationary driver licence from an automatic (A) condition to manual.

Steps to follow

    Step 1: Check your eligibility

    If you are on your Ps and you want to remove the automatic condition (A) from your licence, you will need to be retested in a manual vehicle.

    If you are off your Ps and transitioned to a full driver licence, the automatic (A) condition is removed automatically, so there is no need to apply to have it removed.

    Step 2: Learn to drive a manual vehicle

    Before taking your test, you’ll need to learn to drive a manual vehicle. 

    When practising:

    • You must have a supervising driver seated beside you who holds a full licence for the type of vehicle you are learning in.
    • You must drive a manual vehicle that is approved for Probationary drivers (or hold a valid exemption)
    • You must display:
      • ‘P’ plates on the front and back of your vehicle
      • ‘Driver Under Instruction’ plates while you’re practising. Note:  These must be 150mm x 150mm, with black lettering on a yellow background. VicRoads does not provide these plates.

    Step 3: Book and prepare for your drive test

    Book online for the quickest and most convenient experience. You can view available appointments, choose a time that suits you, and receive immediate confirmation.

    You can also book and pay for your drive test:

    As part of your appointment, you’ll complete:

    • An eyesight test
    • A drive test in a manual vehicle

    Prepare for your appointment

    • Arrive at least 15 minutes early
    • If you arrive late, you'll need to reschedule and pay another fee

    Step 4: Get your updated licence

    If you pass the test and pay the licence variation fee, the automatic (A) condition will be removed from your licence. You can then legally drive both automatic and manual cars. You’ll receive:

    • A receipt you can use as a temporary licence
    • An updated licence in the myVicRoads app (available straight away)
    • A new plastic licence card sent to you
