Steps to sell and complete your vehicle transfer online
When you sell a vehicle or trailer registered in Victoria, you need to let us know within 14 days. This includes cars, motorcycles, trucks, trailers and caravans. You’ll need to complete a notice of disposal with the buyer.
The easiest way to do this is online through your myVicRoads account with the buyer’s details.
If you’re selling your vehicle to someone interstate, we recommend you cancel your registration and remove your plates.
If you’re a company or organisation, you can’t complete a transfer online through the myVicRoads business account. You should visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre to finalise the transfer.
VicRoads Customer Number
- If your company already has a VicRoads record (customer number), you'll need to bring evidence of identity, such as your licence or passport.
- If your company does not have a VicRoads record (customer number), see Transfer to or from a company or see Types of identity documents.

Step 1: Before the sale
There are a few things to do before you can sell your vehicle:
- if you’ve got a myVicRoads account you can easily do your transfer online
- get a roadworthy certificate (if required)
- cancel any direct debit registration payments
- print a Transfer vehicle form (PDF) to collect the buyer’s details (if required) during the sale and then enter them into your myVicRoads account later to complete the transfer online.
You should also check if you need a roadworthy certificate. If your vehicle needs one, you can go to a licensed vehicle tester for an inspection. They’ll make sure it’s safe to drive on the road.
Once your vehicle passes inspection, you’ll be issued with a roadworthy certificate that will remain current for 30 days. If your vehicle does not pass the first inspection, you’ll need to fix any issues before you can have it reinspected. If the vehicle is reinspected by the licenced vehicle inspector within 14 days, you won’t need to pay the full fee again.
Find out more about roadworthy certificates at the Transport Victoria website.
If you’re selling a vehicle with conditional registration, the transfer must be done in person. You’ll need to let the buyer know:
- that the vehicle has registration conditions
- that they must apply to have a new Certificate of Approved Operations issued in their name.
If you’re selling a vehicle that has a condition that prevents the registration from being transferred, you’ll need to cancel it first. The buyer will then need to apply for a new conditional registration.
If you complete the notice of disposal online (see step 2 below), any direct debits you have set up to pay for your registration will be automatically cancelled. This won’t affect direct debits you have set up to pay for registration on other vehicles.
If you don’t complete the notice of disposal online, you’ll need to cancel any direct debits manually, before you transfer the vehicle.

Step 2: During the sale
During the sale of your vehicle, you’ll need to do the following:
- collect the buyer's details – you can use the Transfer vehicle form (PDF) to do this, or input their details straight into myVicRoads on your device.
- give the buyer the roadworthy certificate (if the vehicle requires it)
- complete the notice of disposal online.
Completing the notice of disposal
The easiest way to complete the notice of disposal online is through your myVicRoads account online or via the myVicRoads app. Once you’ve logged in, all you need to do is find your vehicle and select ‘Transfer vehicle’.
You can use the details on the printed Transfer vehicle form (PDF) to collect the buyer’s details. Make sure the buyer has a copy of your details on the form for their records.
Once you’ve completed the notice for disposal, you’ll get an email within 24 hours to say that we've transferred the vehicle out of your name.
If you don’t complete and submit the notice of disposal, you may be subject to any fines, tolls and other legal issues linked with the vehicle after you’ve sold it.

Stage 3: After the sale
After you’ve sold the vehicle, you should keep all the records, in case there are any issues later.
Make sure that you save a copy of the transfer form, that you filled out with the buyer, with both of your details on it.
If you can’t do the transfer online, you’ll need to go to a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.
