Translator and interpreter services

Below are some translator and interpreter services offered through VicRoads. These services are free of charge.

Translated driver licence information

Information on how to get your driver licence is available in 30 languages.

Translating your driver licence, learner permit or documents

If your driver licence or learner permit is not in English, you must have it translated by any NAATI accredited translator or an appropriate consulate in Australia. Fees may apply.

You can use a translated current International Driver Permit if it complies with the UN Convention for international driving permits and:

  • is issued by the country which issued your overseas driver licence
  • it contains the first issue date, licence categories, expiry date, your full name and date of birth.

National Relay Service (NRS)

If you are d/Deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech or communication difficulty, follow these steps to contact us:

  1. Contact us through your preferred NRS call channel detailed on NRS call numbers and links.
  2. Provide the NRS with our phone number: 13 11 71.

If you need help making an appointment or completing a form, you can ask your family or friends or visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.

Help with your drive test

To check if you need an interpreter for your drive test, see if you can understand these common instructions:

  • “Turn left at the traffic lights.”
  • “Turn right at the next street.”
  • “Move to the right lane.”
  • “When safe move to the left lane.”

If you can understand these instructions, you don’t need an interpreter and can book your test online.

If you can't understand these instructions, consider if hand signals or repeated instructions would assist you. If you think they would, you don’t need an interpreter and can book your test online.
