Steps to register a vehicle
-
1
Step 1: Check you’re eligible
To register a car or other light vehicle, you must:
- be at least 16 years old
- have your car garaged in Victoria
- have evidence of identity.
-
2
Step 2: Prepare your paperwork
Registering a car requires some paperwork. You’ll need:
- a completed Vehicle registration form (PDF)
- evidence of identity. This includes your Victorian garage address, if it differs from your Victorian residential address.
- a current and original roadworthy certificate*
You may be eligible for a concession, learn more about registration concessions.
If someone else is registering the car on your behalf, you’ll need to give them a signed, original Authority to act as an agent form (PDF).
You'll need additional documents if your vehicle is imported, has been modified or written off.
For more information see:
*If you’ve got a brand-new vehicle** you won’t need a roadworthy certificate, unless you’re registering a taxi.
**A brand-new vehicle means that it’s never been registered in Australia, and any kilometres on the speedometer are from the sale and delivery to the owner before registering.

Step 3: Book your appointment
To book your appointment with us, you'll need:
- the vehicle identification number (VIN) or chassis number
- your vehicle's engine number
- your current Victorian licence number, or myVicRoads customer number.
You’ll need to pay an appointment fee when you book. Concessions are not available.
Book online
Booking online is the easiest and fastest way to get an appointment time that works for you.
Online appointments can only be booked in a personal name. If you want to register the vehicle in a company name, make sure all paperwork shows the company as the applicant. You’ll also need to provide an original and signed Authority to act as an agent form (PDF).
Other ways to book an appointment
Online appointments aren't available for heavy vehicles, machinery, vessels or vehicles last registered in WA, SA, Tas and ACT.
If you can't book your appointment online, we’re here to help. You can:

Step 4: Attend your appointment
Make sure that you have all your relevant documentation and bring your vehicle with you (in most cases, we will need to inspect your vehicle).
Also bring tools and screws, so you can put your number plates on before you leave VicRoads.
You might need to pay some fees depending on your vehicle. Fees may include:
- standard registration charge
- number plate fee
- Transport Accident Commission (TAC) charge
- motor vehicle duty fee.
You don't have to pay motor vehicle duty if you've got evidence your vehicle was last registered in your name in Australia.
Keep in mind, if you’re late you may be rescheduled to the next available timeslot and may need to pay an additional fee.
What if I need to change my booking?
Go to check your booking to manage your appointment booking, registration and other online services.
Changing or cancelling your appointment with more than 24 hours' notice means you'll:
- pay another appointment fee when changing the appointment to a new time
- get a refund of the inspection fee, if applicable.
If you change or cancel with less than 24 hours' notice, you won't get any fees back and won’t be eligible for a refund. You'll need to pay for a new appointment.
