Register a vehicle from another state

Moved to Victoria and brought your interstate-registered vehicle with you? Here's how to register it in Victoria.

Steps to register a vehicle from another state

  1. 1

Check that you're eligible to register your vehicle in Victoria

You can register your interstate vehicle in Victoria if:

    • you have a current interstate registration
    • you are the person listed as the owner on that interstate registration
    • you now have the vehicle garaged in Victoria
    • the vehicle has not been modified

You must register the vehicle in person. You can't do this online.

If you don’t meet the above requirements, you will need to follow the steps on the Register a Vehicle page, and a Roadworthy Certificate may be required.

If you’re purchasing a new or used vehicle from another state and have transported it to Victoria, you will need to visit the Register a Vehicle page and complete the steps there, as this vehicle is not already registered in your name.

If someone else is registering the car on your behalf, see requirements at Register on behalf of someone else.

  1. 2

    Prepare your paperwork

To register an interstate vehicle in Victoria, you’ll need:

Registering a vehicle from NSW, Qld, SA, WA or NT:

You do not need a Certificate of Roadworthiness if both of these apply:

  • The registration is current, or has expired less than 3 months before the day of your appointment, and

  • You want to register it in Victoria in the same name as the interstate registration (ownership of the vehicle is not changing),

Registering a vehicle from ACT or TAS:

You do not need a Certificate of Roadworthiness if both of these apply:

  • The registration is current on the day of your appointment, and
  • You want to register it in Victoria in the same name as the interstate registration (ownership of the vehicle is not changing).
  1. 3

Visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre

You will need to book an appointment, as you can't register a vehicle online.

Bring your paperwork and your interstate plates with you. If you are driving the vehicle when you visit, bring tools or screws so you can fit your new plates before you leave.

    At your appointment, we will:

    • check your documents
    • take your interstate number plates and give you a receipt
    • take payment for registration and TAC charges
    • register your vehicle in Victoria
    • give you new Victorian number plates.

You will need to hand back your old interstate number plates.

You can check with your previous state's registration authority to see if you're eligible for any refund. You may need your Victorian registration receipt for this.

Fees may include:

You don’t have to pay motor vehicle duty.

You may be entitled to a concession. For more information, see Concession and discounts.

  1. 4

    Attach your new number plates

Before you drive your vehicle, you must attach your new Victorian plates.
