How to cancel your registration online
-

Step 1: Gather your documents if you want a refund
You may be eligible for a refund if you cancel your registration before it expires. The refund covers the time left on your registration.
When cancelling your registration, you’ll need to provide one of the following documents if you’re applying for a refund:
- Written-off vehicle: An insurance report or wrecker’s receipt. See written-off vehicles on the Transport Victoria website for more information on the process.
- Vehicle registered in another state: A receipt from the interstate authority showing they have collected your number plates.
- Any other reason: A photo of your number plate destroyed (cut in half), or a statutory declaration (PDF) explaining why you don't have the number plates.

Step 2: Cancel online
You’re now ready to cancel your registration. The quickest and easiest way to do this is through your myVicRoads account.
- Log in to myVicRoads online or on the app. If it’s a business vehicle, you’ll need to log in to your myVicRoads business account. Don’t have an account? Sign up today.
- On the Vehicles and Registration page, find the vehicle registration you want to cancel.
- Complete the Cancel registration form. You can request your refund as part of this form and attach the relevant documents.
We’ll process your cancellation once you submit your request. It may take a few days for your cancellation to take effect. If your car has been written off, the cancellation will take effect from the day after the accident.
You don’t need to return your number plates to us.

Step 3: Get your refund
If you’ve requested a refund, this should be paid into your bank account within 10 business days. If the refund fails to process, we will send you a cheque instead.
These fees will be deducted from your refund:
- $21.50 processing fee
- 10% of the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) fee.
If your refund is less than these fees, you will not receive a refund.
If you want to keep your number plates
If you have custom plates that you want to keep, you can’t cancel online. You can either:
You’ll need to provide:
- a completed refund form (PDF) (if you want a refund)
- evidence of identity.
We’ll send you a refund cheque in the mail, which could take up to four weeks to process.
If you’re cancelling someone else’s registration
To cancel someone else’s registration, you need their permission:
- Download and complete a refund form (PDF) or an Authority to act as an agent form (PDF).
- Visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre. Make sure you bring the above form and evidence of your identity.
