What is the Hazard Perception Test?
Hazard perception involves identifying potential road hazards and reacting safely. As a new driver, it’s critical that you develop good hazard perception.
You must pass the Hazard Perception Test before you can take your drive test.
The test takes up to 45 minutes and will show you 25 short videos of driving situations. You’ll need to react appropriately (slow down, stop or maintain speed). If you don’t respond in time or make the wrong decision, you won’t pass the test.
Who needs to take the Hazard Perception Test?
- All learner drivers who want to get their probationary (P1) licence need to take the Hazard Perception Test. You must hold a current Victorian learner permit and be at least 17 years and 11 months old to take the test.
- Some overseas licence holders converting to a Victorian licence need to complete the Hazard Perception Test
How do I take the test?

To improve your hazard perception, practice these steps:
- See – Scan the road for potential hazards.
- Think – Plan your response to the hazard.
- Do – Act by adjusting your speed or position on the road.
Do the HPT practice test
It's a good idea to take a practice test first, so that you know how the test works and what to expect. A free practice test is available at Hazard perception practice tests for probationary drivers on the Transport Victoria website.
