Transfer a vehicle to/from interstate

In Australia, a vehicle must be registered in the state or territory where the operator of that vehicle lives and where the vehicle is garaged (if not temporary and less than 3 months).

If you’re buying or selling a Victorian registered vehicle (car, truck, motorcycle, caravan or trailer) and the vehicle will be garaged in another state by the buyer, the vehicle cannot remain registered in Victoria and should instead be registered in the new state within 30 days of transfer.

If a Victorian registered vehicle isn’t garaged in Victoria, VicRoads may suspend the registration and substantial penalties may apply if you continue to drive an unregistered vehicle on Australian roads.

Refer to the relevant interstate vehicle transfer instructions below that best relates to your situation.

Transferring your vehicle from interstate

If you own a vehicle registered in another state and you now live in Victoria, you need to change the vehicle registration to a Victorian registration. Visit the Register an interstate vehicle page for details.

Selling your Victorian registered vehicle to an interstate buyer

VicRoads recommends that you cancel the vehicle’s registration at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre and sell the vehicle unregistered. Remember to remove the number plates. This must be done before the buyer takes possession of the vehicle.

The buyer can then apply for an unregistered vehicle permit to transport the vehicle to their home address, and then must register the vehicle in their home state.

Already sold your Victorian vehicle to an interstate buyer

Notify VicRoads of the transfer by submitting the vehicle transfer form [PDF 678 Kb], ensuring that you provide all known details about the buyer, so VicRoads can confirm the transfer and suspend the Victorian registration if the buyer does not register the vehicle in their home state within 30 days.

Buying an interstate vehicle as a Victorian

If you live in Victoria and you’ve purchased a vehicle registered in another state, you need to change the vehicle registration to a Victorian registration. Visit the Register an interstate vehicle page for details.

Buying a Victorian vehicle as an interstate buyer

If you live interstate and buy a Victorian registered vehicle, you can’t register it in your name in Victoria unless you have a Victorian garage address.

If you don’t have a Victorian garage address, you may ask the seller to cancel the vehicle’s registration at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre. You can then apply for an unregistered vehicle permit to transport the vehicle to your home address and then register the vehicle in your home state.

Already bought a Victorian vehicle as an interstate buyer

You have 30 days to register the vehicle in your home state, otherwise the vehicle registration may be suspended by VicRoads.

Interstate authorities hold the view that vehicles registered in Victoria or another state are ‘unregistered’ if they are garaged in their state and are therefore not ‘temporarily’ visiting. If you drive or use the Victorian registered vehicle on interstate roads and are not considered to be ‘temporarily’ visiting, you may be issued with penalties by your state authority.

Buying a Victorian vehicle as an interstate or overseas licenced driver.

A Victorian vehicle registration cannot be transferred to your name if you do not have a Victorian licence or VicRoads customer number.

VicRoads recommends that prior to completing the transfer you visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre to get a customer number.  You’ll need to bring evidence of identity documents to establish your identity.

Your VicRoads customer number is a unique nine-digit number that is required to complete any transaction with VicRoads.
