What are general issue number plates

General issue plates are the standard number plates given to you when you register a car or motorcycle. As per Victorian law, you must always have your number plates on display.

Car general issue number plates

The current general issue plate series for cars includes: 

  • a registration number starting from 1AA.1AA
  • blue characters on a white reflective background
  • the current slogan (for example Victoria – The Education State) printed on the centre bottom of the plate. This is not included on slimline plates.

You’ll need two number plates, one for the front and back of your car. 

Motorcycle general issue number plates

The current general issue motorcycle plate series includes:

  • a registration number starting from 1A.1AA
  • blue characters on a white reflective background
  • the “VIC” slogan printed on the plate.

You only need one number plate for your motorcycle.
