What are taxi number plates?
If you drive a vehicle licensed by Safe Transport Victoria to operate as a taxi service, you’ll need taxi plates. A taxi is a commercial passenger vehicle (CPV) providing booked and unbooked (rank and hail) services, and taxi plates identify approved taxis on the road.
How do I get my taxi number plates?
You’ll get your taxi plates as a part of your registration process. Learn more about using your vehicle as a taxi (or CPV) on Safe Transport Victoria’s website.
There are certain conditions you’ll need to stick to once you have your number plates:
- Taxi plates can only be assigned to a vehicle in the name of someone with a taxi licence.
- The plates need to stay on the vehicle they’re assigned to.
- You can only remove plates if they’re cancelled, the numbers change, or you transfer the plates to another vehicle.
- A fee applies to issue or replace taxi number plates.
What if I need to transfer my taxi number plates?
To transfer taxi number plates (from one vehicle to another), both vehicles need to be registered to the same person or company. You need to return any number plates not in use to VicRoads.
What style and type of taxi plate will I get?
Taxi plates differ based on their intended location of operation and type of licence.
All taxi plates will include:
- a slogan 'ACCREDITED TAXI SERVICE' across the top of the plate
- the 'VIC' slogan running vertically along the left side of the plate
- white characters on a green background with a gold southern cross design, separating the letters and numbers.
These plates are:
- for CPVs used for on demand hiring by the public within the metropolitan area
- in the series 0000 M to 9999 M. The previous series was M 0000 to M 9999 (except for M 5000 - M 5099 for taxis with wheel-chair licences only).
These plates are:
- for taxis operating out of Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong only
- in the series U 0000 to U 9999 (except for U 5000 - U 5099 for taxis with wheel-chair licences only).
These plates are:
- for taxis operating in country areas other than Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong
- in the series C 0000 to C 9999 (except for C 5000 - C 5099 for taxis with wheel-chair licences only).
