Pay your registration for 3, 6 or 12 months

Pay less upfront when you choose a 3 or 6 month registration renewal.

Key things to know:

  • You can choose to register your vehicle for a shorter period of time. This will apply to your next registration renewal period. 
  • You can pay less upfront when you choose a short-term registration period, and make your registration payments every 3 or 6 months.
  • A service fee of $2.65 applies for every 3 and 6 month registration renewal, unless you hold an eligible concession card.
  • Shorter registration is not available for light trailers, caravans, boats or other vessels.
  • If you own a heavy vehicle or heavy trailer you can change your registration period by visiting a VicRoads Customer Service Centre (not online or over the phone).

How to change your registration renewal period

Step 1: Sign-up or login to myVicRoads personal account

Step 2: Click on the ‘Vehicles & Registration’ tile on the homepage

Step 3: Find your vehicle and click to ‘Change’ the registration period

Step 4: Choose your preferred registration period, click 'Next'

Step 5: Review the details and then 'Confirm' the change

Step 6: Pay your registration if it's currently due for renewal.

Note: If your registration is currently due for renewal (to allow for system reprocessing) you can only change the registration period between:

  • Monday to Saturday 7:30am - 8:15pm or 
  • Sunday 12pm - 8:15pm.  

Alternatively, you can visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre to change your registration period and pay your renewal.

Step 2: Click to ‘Change’ the registration period of a vehicle in your holdings

Step 3: Select all vehicles you’d like the registration period change to apply to

Step 4: Choose your preferred registration period, click ‘Next’ 

Step 5: Review the details and then ‘Confirm’ the change

Step 6: Pay the registration if they’re currently due for renewal.

What if I have a discount or concession on my registration? 

If you already have one of the concessions / discounts listed below, you will still get a discount on your registration and the $2.65 service fee will not apply to concession card holders. If you want to find out if your eligibility follow the links below.  

What if I have an apprentice discount?

Your apprentice discount applies to shorter registration periods.However, before the registration period ends you’ll need to: 

  • re-apply for your apprentice discount 
  • re-submit your application with supporting paperwork 
  • undergo employer checks.

What if I've recently transferred the vehicle? 

For a vehicle recently transferred to you, you can change this to a shorter registration period when it’s time to renew.
